Sydney’s Jonathan Boulet, making something of a comeback with their upcoming new album, rounded off a triple-bill of acts who all could’ve been headliner.

The wait is over – the 2012 Sydney Film Festival programme has been announced. In his first year as festival director, Nashen Moodley has secured Cannes’ opening night film (which would be Wes Anderson’s Moonrise Kingdom) screening the film a mere three weeks after its world premiere; shaken things up with a two-parter in the festival’s Official Competition; and cemented the festival’s dedication to Indigenous filmmaking with the Blackfella Films programme, which includes the world premiere of Rachel Perkins’ Mabo.

Religion reined supreme for the majority of the comedians on the night, with social commentary/politics and tales of family and/or gay life rounding off the major themes. When the comedians were personal and not worrying about the audience's response per se they were at their best; when they seemed hell-bent on impressing or shocking the audience the jokes often backfired. Whilst there were a lot more misses than hits at this year's Cracker compared to those in the past, there's no denying that it's still one of the best nights out of the year, and essential for anyone keen to head along to some shows at the Sydney Comedy Festival but not quite sure where to start.
